Custom Tapestry: The Complete Buying & Design Guide

A custom tapestry turns a blank wall into a statement — whether you’re covering a bare dorm wall, branding a trade-show booth, hanging a backdrop for a wedding, or printing a one-of-a-kind piece of art. At Quokka Prints we produce custom tapestries in soft, drapeable fabrics with edge-to-edge dye-sublimation printing, so your photo, pattern, logo, or illustration reproduces in rich, fade-resistant color. This guide walks you through fabrics, sizes, print methods, finishing, pricing, and the exact steps to get a proof in your inbox.

Why a Custom Tapestry Is Worth It

Tapestries are the most affordable way to fill a large vertical space. A framed canvas of the same dimensions can cost five to ten times more, weighs significantly more, and is far harder to ship or hang. A printed fabric tapestry rolls up to the size of a paper towel tube, hangs with a few push-pins or a curtain rod, and can be taken down and re-hung in seconds. That makes them ideal for renters, students, event planners, and anyone who likes to refresh a space seasonally.

They’re also remarkably versatile. The same product works as wall art, a photo backdrop, a ceiling drape, a picnic blanket, a table cover, or a room divider. Because the print is continuous across the whole surface, large-format designs — mandalas, galaxies, landscapes, brand graphics — look seamless in a way that tiled posters never do.

Fabric Choices & What They’re Best For

The fabric you choose drives the look, drape, and durability of your tapestry. Lightweight polyester is the everyday workhorse; heavier suede-feel and canvas-weight fabrics deliver a premium, opaque finish. Here’s how the common options compare.

Fabric Weight Feel & Opacity Best For
Poly poplin ~110 gsm Light, slightly sheer, soft drape Budget wall hangings, drapes
Microfiber suede ~180 gsm Plush, matte, fully opaque Premium art, photo prints
Canvas-weave poly ~260 gsm Heavy, structured, textured Gallery look, durable backdrops
Cotton-blend ~200 gsm Natural hand, softer colors Bohemian / vintage styles

For most wall-art and event orders we recommend the microfiber suede — it’s fully opaque so wall color doesn’t show through, photographs beautifully under event lighting, and the plush surface gives saturated blacks and vivid color. Choose canvas-weave when you need a rigid, gallery-style hang or a backdrop that will be reused many times.

Printing Methods & Color

Quokka Prints uses dye-sublimation for custom tapestries. The design is printed onto transfer paper and then heat-pressed at roughly 400°F, turning the ink to gas that bonds directly into the polyester fibers. Because the color becomes part of the fabric rather than sitting on top, the result is breathable, soft to the touch, crack-proof, and highly resistant to fading — even after repeated washing.

Sublimation needs polyester (or a high-poly blend) to bond, which is why our brightest, most photographic tapestries are poly-based. For natural cotton looks we use a pigment process that produces a softer, more muted palette. Whatever the substrate, send artwork at 150 dpi at full print size in RGB; for crisp edges on logos and text, vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) reproduce best.

Sizes, Finishing & Hanging

Common sizes run from a compact small (about 40×30 in) for above a desk, to medium (60×50 in) as a bedroom focal point, to large (80×60 in) for a full accent wall, and oversized backdrops at 90×90 in and up. We can also produce fully custom dimensions for booths and stages.

Standard finishing is a clean, hemmed edge on all four sides. Optional add-ons include grommets for rod or hook hanging, a sewn rod pocket along the top, or a pole-pocket backdrop finish for trade-show stands. For pin-up hanging, no hardware is needed — push-pins or small adhesive hooks at the corners are enough for lightweight fabrics.

How Pricing Works (Volume Discounts)

Per-unit cost falls steeply as quantity rises, because setup, color-matching, and press calibration are spread across more pieces. A single one-off tapestry carries the full setup overhead; by a dozen or more, you’re paying close to material-and-labor cost. The chart below shows a representative price-per-unit curve for a medium suede tapestry.

Per-Unit Price vs. Order Quantity

Step-by-Step Buying Guide

  1. Define the job. Decide whether this is wall art, an event backdrop, or branded display — that sets the size and fabric.
  2. Pick a size. Measure your wall or stage and leave a few inches of margin so the piece breathes.
  3. Choose a fabric. Suede for premium photo prints, poplin for budget drapes, canvas for durable reusable backdrops.
  4. Prep artwork. Supply 150 dpi at full size (or vector for logos/text), in RGB, with a little bleed past the edges.
  5. Select finishing. Hemmed edges as standard; add grommets, a rod pocket, or pole pockets as needed.
  6. Approve a proof. Review the digital proof for color, scale, and placement before we print.
  7. Confirm quantity. Bump up the count if you can — volume pricing makes extras inexpensive.

Pre-Order Checklist

  • Final dimensions confirmed against the wall or stage
  • High-resolution artwork (150 dpi full size, or vector)
  • Fabric selected for the right opacity and feel
  • Hanging method decided — pins, rod pocket, or grommets
  • Color expectations reviewed (screens run brighter than fabric)
  • Quantity set with volume discount in mind
  • Digital proof approved before production

Caring for Your Tapestry

Sublimated polyester tapestries are low-maintenance. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang to dry, or tumble dry low; the color won’t crack or peel because it’s embedded in the fibers. Light wrinkles fall out on their own once hung, or you can steam them — avoid pressing a hot iron directly on the print. Stored rolled rather than folded, a quality tapestry stays crease-free and vivid for years of repeat use.
